WE Senior Capstone Course:
WE 690, 691, 692 Capstone Welding Design

Description

This sequence of courses is intended to culminate your welding engineering education with the execution of a practical engineering project. This provides you the invaluable experience of applying your academic knowledge to a real world problem. Projects are suggested by industrial sponsors, who provide materials, equipment and expertise. You will interact over three academic quarters with the industrial sponsor, a faculty mentor, and with your team of two or three fellow students to plan, execute, and document the project. The project culminates in a poster presentation at the national American Welding Society convention where it is judged by professionals in the field relative to other projects here and at other institutions. The final report for each project is also submitted to the Lincoln Design Competition. Projects run the gamut, but often deal with the development of a welding procedure for a particular application, the evaluation of new equipment or a new process, or the investigation of the weldability of a new material. Projects are typically sponsored by automobile companies, heavy equipment manufacturers, defense contractors, welding suppliers, and a variety of other concerns. What you learn in this course is important in that it serves as a bridge between the concepts and fundamentals oriented knowledge that you have obtained in your formal education and the more application oriented skills that will be important in your career.

Prerequisites: 4th year standing in welding engineering program for WE690, WE690 for WE691, and WE691 for WE692.

The course is offered in the Autumn (690), Winter (691), and Spring (692) quarters. The instructor is Dr. Farson.

Information for Potential Corporate/Industrial Project Sponsors

Each time 69X runs, 10-16 teams of students fan out across central OH to work on projects brought to us by various corporate and industrial sponsors. Teams have worked with hospitals, universities, consulting companies, and manufacturers of all types of products. The 69X faculty welcome the opportunity to talk with potential sponsors about ideas for project. Please contact Dr. Farson (farson.4) for more information about sponsoring a project at your company.
